Low voltage halogens used in downlights.
These halogens are usually 35 watts but the transformers can have ‘gear loss’ of up to 20% so instead of producing the recommended 30W it is consuming 42W. The halogen downlights only have around a 2000 hour shelf life, which is about 1 year at 6 hours a day.
An important point to remember is that if they are not installed correctly, they are a fire hazard.
The running cost for 6 hours a day, 365 days a year at 23 cents per kWh is $19.39.
What’s the alternative?

LED downlights.
LED stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode’, they are super energy efficient, using approximately 80% less energy than halogen or incandescent lighting which means significant savings on your power bills.
They use around 9 watts but give as much light as the old halogen lamps. The LEDs have a shelf life of up to 50,000 hours so around 25 years at 6 hours a day.
These fittings run cool so there is no fire risk.
At 23 cents per kWh, the running costs for 6 hours a day, 365 days a year is $4.76.
